Is Chiropractic Care Really Suitable for Kids?

Chiropractic care is for anyone who has issues or the potential for issues related to a subluxation (a spinal misalignment – commonly due to trauma). So the short answer to this question is, “yes!” From the time we’re born, our spine is subjected to repeated mild trauma. Indeed, the very act of birth can be traumatic to a baby’s spine. Think about the doctor pulling a baby by his/her head to aid a birth, and you’ll know what I mean. From there, babies first learn to lift their heads, which can put pressure on the spine. Then, learning to roll over, crawl, stand, and eventually walk, all involve pressures and minor traumas to the spine, resulting in subluxations. Just think about how many times a toddler falls down on his/her bottom while learning to walk – not to mention the possibility that they might be accidentally dropped, or roughly tossed around by fun uncle Joe.
None of these minor incidents are likely to cause serious injury. Your child probably wouldn’t even cry from most of the episodes we’re talking about. But each one is enough to cause small misalignments, which can have an effect on their developing nervous system. And it’s these misalignments that begin to manifest in noticeable ways that most people might not associate with a need to see a chiropractor. Everything from colic and nursing difficulties, to sleeplessness and breathing problems can be traced to disturbances in the nervous system that can be helped with chiropractic care. And with a quick, simple check, we can make sure everything is aligned for proper growth and development.
As children move from the toddler stage to playing at the playground, more opportunities for subluxations present themselves. A fall from the swings or tumble off the monkey bars is a perfectly normal part of being a kid and can seem inconsequential, while there is a very real possibility – even probability – for spinal misalignment. As these misalignments add up over time, the resulting effects on the nervous system can lead to more serious issues as the child grows. Again a simple, painless chiropractor visit can correct these issues before they become bigger problems.
Throughout childhood (and adulthood too), any time a person is involved in a sports accident, car crash or other such trauma – even when it seems minor – it’s a good idea to make sure there was no injury to the spine and have the person’s alignment checked. Parents have reported that these periodic adjustments have helped with allergies, headaches, asthma, ear infections, and more. This makes sense, as all of these ailments can potentially be related to a subluxation. While chiropractors do not treat diseases or conditions, the work we do to correct subluxations affects the proper functioning of the nervous system, and everything functions better when your nerves are free to do the job for which they were created.
The bottom line is this: Chiropractic care is not only suitable for kids, it is absolutely recommended.
