Chiropractic Care During Pregnancy

During pregnancy, a woman’s body obviously goes through significant changes, ranging from hormonal adjustments to a more obvious physical transformation. These necessary and perfectly normal changes in themselves are nothing to worry about. They are simply the result of a woman’s body working to create the perfect environment for her developing baby. Some of these normal changes though, can result in a misaligned spine or joints. A pelvic misalignment can actually reduce the amount of room available for the developing baby, and the baby can experience difficulty getting into the best possible position for delivery when the pelvis is misaligned.
Additionally, with changes like pelvic shifting, a protruding abdomen, postural adaptations, and increased back curve, it’s no wonder that a sore back is one of the most common complaints of pregnant women. So how can chiropractic care help? Chiropractic helps establish pelvic balance and alignment, relieving the pressure on the pelvis and allowing for proper room and positioning for the baby. Also, as chiropractic care focuses on the nervous system, keeping the spine aligned, it helps the entire body work better. Overall, chiropractic care during pregnancy can help maintain a generally healthier pregnancy, prevent a potential C-section or breech delivery, control nausea symptoms, reduce labor and delivery time, relieve back, neck and joint pain, and even increase the likelihood of a full term delivery.
Is Chiropractic Care During Pregnancy Safe?
The fact is that chiropractic care for pregnant women is not only safe but essential. Chiropractors are trained to treat pregnant women in a safe, effective manner, and there is no additional risk associated with pregnancy and chiropractic care. As for the effectiveness of chiropractic care during pregnancy, in one study, women who received chiropractic care through their first pregnancy had, on average, 24% shorter labor times than the group not receiving such care, and 84% of women experienced relief of back pain during pregnancy with chiropractic care. “Back labor” was also significantly reduced, as the joints of the pelvis function better with chiropractic alignments.
One last note: Chiropractic isn’t only helpful as prenatal care but as postpartum care as well. Seeing the chiropractor after the baby is born keeps mom feeling good and assists with the physical stresses of the body changes that occur after the birth. Additionally, postpartum treatments have been shown to reduce the likelihood and severity of postpartum depression. So if you’re expecting or just had a baby, come on in to see us. Of course you don’t have to be a mommy or mommy-to-be to benefit from chiropractic, so come in and see us whatever’s going on in your life!
