Food Additives and Preservatives to Watch Out For

chiropractor san clemente Food Additives and Preservatives to Watch Out ForThese days, it seems one almost needs to be a chemist to interpret the ingredients on a package of food.  In addition to the ingredients we know to avoid, like high sugar and salt content, there are a number of additives and preservatives in most food that might be harmful to us.  How can we know which ingredients are ok and which can do us real harm?  One way is to stay away from all packaged and pre-prepared foods.  Even then, you would want to buy organic to avoid pesticides and fertilizers that can be harmful, but it would reduce a lot of the bad stuff.

For most of us though, that isn’t realistic.  It’s possible of course, but there is something to be said for the convenience of packaged foods, as long as we’re not trading our health for that convenience.  So the best solution is to know what the ingredients are in your food, and to know which additives and preservatives to look out for.  The following list will help you make the best choices when shopping at the grocery store.

Food dyes: Recently, the UK banned 8 food dyes.  This move came about as the result of a study that showed these dyes caused hyperactivity and other behavioral problems in children.  The US FDA did not follow suit and take the same steps – which, given the control the food industry has on our regulatory agencies, isn’t a shock.  Here are the dyes which were banned and which you should avoid:

  • Blue 1 and 2
  • Yellow 5 and 6
  • Red 3 and 40
  • Orange B
  • Green 3

Partially Hydrogenated Vegetable Oils: There has been a lot of talk about trans fats lately, and these oils are the culprits.  These oils are created by adding hydrogen atoms to regular vegetable oil.  This extends the shelf life of the products containing the oils, but it does so at the expense of the health of the consumer.  Avoid these oils to reduce your risk of heart disease and high cholesterol.

Potassium Bromate: You will often find this additive in breads and rolls.  It increases volume, so it is purely a financial decision for a company to add it.  This additive has been shown to cause cancer and has been banned in every country in the world, except the US and Japan.

MSG (Monosodium Glutamate): MSG is known to trigger severe headaches, nausea and vomiting in those who are sensitive to its affects.  Sudden cardiac deaths have also been linked to long term use of MSG and the other additives containing it.  As it is not always labeled as MSG, be on the lookout for these ingredients that always contain MSG:

  • Glutamate
  • Glutamic Acid
  • Gelatin
  • Calcium Caseinate
  • Autolyzed Yeast
  • Monopotassium Glutamate
  • Textured Protein
  • Sodium Caseinate

Sodium Benzoate: This preservative prevents bacterial and fungal growth.  Sounds like a good thing, but sodium benzoate is one of the most dangerous preservatives there is.  A chemical compound known as benzene is formed when this additive is mixed with vitamin C or ascorbic acid, and benzene is a known carcinogen.

BHA and BHT: These chemicals are added to a number of foods to slow food decay.  Studies show that BHA, in particular, might be a cancer causing agent.  While studies of BHT are inconclusive at this time, your best bet is to avoid both of these very similarly structured compounds.

It will take you a few minutes longer at the grocery store to scan the ingredients list for the above additives, but the little extra time is a small price to pay for keeping these harmful ingredients out of the bodies of you and your family.  If you have questions about following a healthy diet or natural health in general, get in touch with our San Clemente Chiropractor office.  We’ll be glad to get you on the path to total health!

Sleeping Posture and Back Pain

chiropractor san clemente Sleeping Posture and Back PainMany visitors to our San Clemente Chiropractor’s office don’t realize that there are some positions that we sleep in that can actually trigger back pain. What happens is that our spine isn’t aligned properly and the back muscles are being disproportionately stretched. For those who like to sleep on their stomach, what’s happening is that they are causing the curve of the lower back to become extended, which can cause stress on the muscles of the neck.  Allowing the natural curves of the spine to be supported while sleeping is ideal.

For people who are suffering with back pain, they may find that sleeping on a firm mattress or using a bed board while sleeping on their side can be helpful.  Make sure to put a pillow between the legs (at knee-level) prior to bending the knees and also a pillow under the head.  This type of sleeping posture has been known to ease discomfort levels and allow many back pain sufferers to get a much better night’s sleep.

If you happen to be one of the people who simply have to sleep on your stomach, there is a method that can help to align your spine.  (As stated previously, sleeping on the back isn’t recommended by chiropractors.) Simply place a pillow under the abdomen, and make sure that there is no pillow under the head.  Try using this sleep posture tonight – you might notice that your back pain isn’t quite as bad as it would normally be.

Experiencing back pain while sleeping will often times extend to the morning.  In addition to regular chiropractor visits, doing some relaxing and stretching exercises each morning will not only get the blood flowing and wake you up fully, but you will relieve some of the soreness that was brought on during the previous night’s sleep.  One exercise that may be of some relief is the following:

1. Lay on your back with a small pillow under your head.
2. Place two large pillows below your knees and concentrate deeply on relaxing the back muscles.
3. Close your eyes and breathe deeply while focusing on relaxation.  Do this for 15-20 minutes.
4. Gently remove the pillows from under your knees with knees remaining bent.
5. Slowly pull one leg to your chest and hold for 5 seconds.
6. Repeat with other leg, and do this for three repetitions per leg.
7. Slowly pull both legs to the chest at the same time and hold for 5 seconds.  Do this three times.
8. Slowly roll over onto your knees and up to a standing position

Doing this type of stretching exercise in the morning shortly after you’ve woken up will not only help alleviate back pain, but can also keep you limber and flexible.

For people who experience back pain while sitting, it is recommended that a small pillow be placed in the small of the back. This will offer support and allow the person to sit with better posture and a lower degree of discomfort.

It should be noted that we chiropractors recommend that people with back pain never wear corsets. The reason for this is that back muscles can weaken when restricted in such a manner, and this can eventually even lead to muscle atrophy.  Corsets aren’t optimal for anyone, but especially not for sufferers of back pain.

There are a lot of things that we can do to not only prevent, but also alleviate back pain.  Seeing a Chiropractor in conjunction with proper sleeping methods and stretching exercises is optimal.  Things like having proper sleeping postures, not smoking, being active, doing regular back exercises, and watching your weight are all terrific measures to take in ensuring that you’re doing everything you can to feel as good as you can.  For more advice on reducing back pain and living a healthy lifestyle, get in touch with our San Clemente Chiropractor office today!

Obesity and Back Pain – There is a Link

chiropractor san clemente Obesity and Back Pain There is a LinkObesity is described as an excess of total body fat. A person who currently weighs 20% or more above his or her normal body weight is considered obese.  Why are we talking about obesity? Simple. Obesity has been proven to be one of the leading causes of back pain. In many cases, if an obese person were to reduce their weight by only 10%, it would make an unbelievable difference with their level of pain.  The reason that obesity is one of the leading causes of back pain is because extra abdominal weight can actually pull the body forward.  This puts a lot of strain on lower back muscles, which results in pain for the person dealing with this issue.

Obesity can take pain to an entirely new level by throwing posture off, which makes it difficult and almost impossible at times to align your body properly.  The back muscles are forced to pick up any slack and develop new ways in which the person carries and shifts their weight.  One area of the spine which is most vulnerable to the negative effects of obesity is the lower back – also known as the lumbar spine. When you live a fairly sedentary lifestyle and rarely get exercise, this can lead to poor flexibility and weak back muscles, pelvic muscles, and even thigh muscles. Being obese can actually increase the curve of the lower spine, which can cause the pelvis to tilt too far forward. As you can probably imagine, this will result in even more back pain.

It’s very common for people to attempt to dismiss or blame the cause of their back problems on normal aging. While it is true that with age, bodily tissues can create changes to the spine, if a person is overweight or obese, the chances are very high that they already have or will have back pain.

Following is a list of things that can happen with a person suffering from obesity:

  • Degenerative Disc Disorder
  • Osteoporosis
  • Hernias
  • Ruptured Discs
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis
  • Unhealthy posture

Sadly, childhood obesity is also on the rise these days. There are many factors in today’s world that contribute to this fact: Computers, video games, television and its nearly constant advertisements for tasty and unhealthy food, to name a few. Some believe that even genetics can play a role when talking about obesity.

A whopping 1/3 of the American population is reported to have back pain, which can also cause fatigue and breathlessness.  All of these factors cause even more inactivity, which can cause weight to increase. This is why it is so important to make fitness a part of your daily routine. Exercise can be worked into anyone’s lifestyle. Even a five minute walk three times per week can be a bigger benefit than you might imagine.

Finding good chiropractic care in conjunction with a lifestyle change has the ability to change your life in ways that you’ve never even imagined.  Nobody wants to live with pain – especially agonizing back pain that can, at times, become immobilizing.  There is hope for everyone suffering with back pain as a result of obesity.  You’ve got all the tools within you that you need to change your life for the better and be able to participate in all of those family functions that you’ve been shying away from for so long.

Keeping it Healthy: Coffee Shop Choices for the Health-Conscious

chiropractor san clemente Keeping it Healthy: Coffee Shop Choices for the Health ConsciousWho doesn’t love going to their local coffee shop to unwind in a relaxing atmosphere with a tasty beverage in-hand?  Most coffee shops have really comfortable couches and chairs, free wireless Internet service, soothing music, pleasant restrooms, and all sorts of other treats that lure us in.  A lot of times we end up hanging out in a coffee shop so long that we end up hungry, so we grab a snack to tide us over.  Coffee shops can’t realistically be called “coffee shops” anymore. They serve all kinds of tasty treats and sometimes even full meals.  So, can you frequent these places and maintain healthy living? It isn’t as easy as you might think, but having a little bit of knowledge about making right choices prior to going into the coffee shop will help you to remain focused and on track with your healthy lifestyle.

Watch out for the obvious

When you walk into a coffee shop and look at their menu and in their pastry cases, you’d probably think that staying away from the items in the pastry case would prevent you from going off track with your diet.  The fact is that a lot of the coffee drinks on the menu contain the same amount of fat and sugar as the pastries in the case – or more! Let’s use the Mocha as an example. A 16 ounce mocha made with whole milk contains 400 calories. If you order a coffee drink along with a pastry, you’ve just ingested your entire day’s limit of saturated fat.

This doesn’t mean that all of the coffee drinks on the menu are bad choices. The less sugar and fat they contain, obviously the better they are for you. A cup of standard coffee with two teaspoons of sugar isn’t terrific for you, but it’s a much better choice than a large mocha with a blueberry scone!

Make wise decisions by doing things like the following:

  • Go for a smaller sized coffee drink
  • Ask for fat-free milk to be put in your drink
  • Opt for drip coffee, hot tea, iced coffee, or an Americano (espresso + hot water)
  • Ask for sugar-free syrups to be used in your drink
  • Use less sugar or go with a sugar substitute like Splenda

Beware of the pastry case!

Moderation is the key with pastries. Having a fresh and warm muffin, scone, or cinnamon roll at the coffee shop is something most people enjoy.  Have you ever really paid close attention to the portion sizes at these places? Everything has practically doubled in size. Cookies, slices of cake and pie, brownies, cinnamon rolls –they have all at least doubled in size over the years, therefore they have doubled in fat and calories as well.  This doesn’t mean that you have to completely deprive yourself of tasty snacks, but that is exactly what they should be – occasional snacks.

  • If at all possible, go for options like a breakfast burrito, oatmeal with raisins, yogurt, etc. The great thing about these types of options is that they are high in protein. Eating food which is higher in protein and complex carbohydrates (not sugar) will help you to feel full faster and longer.
  • Cut the scone, or whatever treat it is that you’ve settled on, in half. If you are there with a friend, why not share with them? If you’re alone, wrap the uneaten half up and save it for tomorrow.
  • Most coffee shops offer low-fat, sugar-free, and bran baked goods.  Opt for these healthier choices whenever possible.

By taking your time to make educated and wise decisions, you will leave the coffee shop feeling relaxed and refreshed, rather than feeling guilty for indulging too much in the wrong items.  Of course as mentioned, moderation is key, even when you’re making the best choices you can.  Too much caffeine, even if you’re not adding sugar or fat, can lead to plenty of problems.  So overall, think of the coffee shop as a place to go for an occasional treat.  Not only will you be helping your body, it will mean that much more when you do go!  For more health tips, be sure to go to our San Clemente Chiropractor Office website.

Why Chiropractors are Better than Drugs

chiropractor san clemente Why Chiropractors are Better than DrugsWe’ve talked a lot about chiropractic care on the blog, but why should you consider chiropractic over drug therapy for much of your medical care? Chiropractic care is the largest drug-free and natural healthcare system in the entire world.  More and more individuals and families are discovering that chiropractic health will benefit them by healing without the use of dangerous drugs.  Due to the long lists of dangerous side-effects which can be found with prescription medications, a growing number of people are turning away from these potentially hazardous substances and are seeking a healthier, more natural approach to their healthcare issues.

Are you one of the millions of people who have grown sick and tired of being sick and tired? It is time to discover just how natural health can be!

Drugs, surgery, etc.

Generally speaking, chiropractors prefer that all patients seek out the least invasive, least dangerous, and most safe and natural care, prior to considering treatments such as drugs, surgery (other than emergency situations), radiation, etc.  Procedures like surgery and radiation have their places, but all too often, patients are turning to these sometimes dangerous options, rather than exploring the benefits of natural health care.  In the cases of many medications, not only do these substances have the potential to be highly addictive, but often times they numb the symptoms, without addressing the source of the symptoms. Drugs do not heal; they merely alter the body’s chemistry.

The Chiropractic Approach

Having a chiropractic check-up can be one of the simplest, easiest ways to rid yourself of chronic stress and other common ailments. All chiropractors have been specially trained to be able to analyze your body, and eventually free you from a sometimes-severe and chronic stressor known as the subluxation.  This is often a painless distortion in one’s body that can affect both the skeletal and nervous system, causing mental and physical stress. It is a fact that the mind and body are intertwined. There few mental issues which will not manifest themselves in some aspect of a person’s physical being.  In fact, it’s very common to witness positive personality and mood changes after a short time in chiropractic care. This is especially true in children.

You very well could have subluxations in your body for several years without even knowing it.  All the while, your health is deteriorating, you’re aging faster, your energy levels drop, disease may even develop, and your body is showing increasing wear and tear. A good analogy to use while on this topic is that of a house with termites. At first, there is no apparent damage and things seem just fine. Then, one day, out of the blue, the entire floor collapses!

Chiropractors specialize in finding and correcting subluxations.  With this type of chiropractic health care, your entire body will benefit. The function of your nervous system will improve, which helps to promote a better adaptation to everyday stress – whether it is psychological or physical.  This is why seeing a doctor of chiropractic is so important.  Being free of subluxations may very well mean the difference between a life of illness and a life of true wellness.  Ready to get started? Back Killing You? It Could be Your Shoes!

chiropractor san clemente Back Killing You? It Could be Your Shoes!Much like a building has a foundation, so does your body.  And in your body’s case, that foundation is your feet.  Just as when a building’s foundation is less than sound, the entire structure is at risk, when your feet are not in good shape, they affect the structure above them, and the alignment of that structure.  This is why we often see people complaining of back pain, when the root of the problem might have more to do with their feet (and their shoes).  This is why we look at the feet during an examination for back pain, not just the back.

One example of the foot having an effect on the rest of the body is in the case of a planter’s wart or other painful issue with the foot.  When this kind of issue exists and is not properly addressed, or when the shoes a person wears actually causes the problem to worsen, the patient tends to walk in such a way that helps them avoid putting pressure on the part of the foot that is causing them pain.  This, in turn, changes their gate, which can have a serious effect on the back, as the muscles of the back have to flex in abnormal ways to compensate for the adjusted gate.

Sometimes though, there is not an obvious problem with the foot, and the culprit is the shoes a person has chosen.  Shoes that don’t lend enough arch support or are too loose or too tight can also affect a person’s posture, gate, and the alignment of their spine.  A very common cause of this is found in women who wear high heels often.  Your foot is simply not meant to function at the angle at which heels cause your foot to walk.  This difference in the angle of the foot causes a change in the center of gravity, which can cause serious strain on the lower back.  For this reason, any shoe heel above about 1 ½ inches is not recommended.  And even then, heels should be worn on a limited basis if at all possible.

The irony is that shoes with no heel, like flip flops (which you can barely call shoes at all), are another common cause of foot problems.  The lack of any arch support at all in this type of footwear often leads to strain and stress on the tendons and joints.  Wearing flip flops and similar footwear for short periods of time once in a while is probably not going to cause any big issues, but they are not recommended for long periods of walking or exercise.  Doing this can cause a host of issues in the feet, ankles, knees, and back.

Your best bet when shoe shopping is to find a shoe that has superior shock absorption, a rigid, straight back (heal counter), and good arch support.  These features will ensure your feet and ankles are well supported, and will help with your body’s alignment.  Of course, even the perfect shoes won’t eliminate the chance of your spine getting out of alignment, so be sure to see your chiropractor on a regular basis to keep your body in tip top shape!

What’s in a Label?

chiropractor san clemente What’s in a Label? There are a lot of label hounds out there.  Some people won’t buy a pair of shoes or a handbag without the D&B branding all over them, and others simply must have the 7 For All Mankind signature stitching on their jeans pockets.  Lately though, another kind of label-conscious consumer is becoming prevalent: the food label scrutinizer.  You see these folks in the grocery store aisles more and more these days. They’re the ones carefully scanning the label of each product before tossing it into their grocery cart.  This is a great thing, because more people thinking about what they’re putting in their carts, means more people thinking about what they’re putting into their bodies.

But do you really understand what you’re reading on the food labels?  Some ingredients, like “sugar” might seem simple enough to understand, but many of us don’t know the whole story behind some of these apparently self-explanatory ingredients.  For example, did you know that if you’re following a vegetarian diet, white sugar shouldn’t be on your list?  Most processed white sugar is filtered through bone char as part of the bleaching process.  That’s something that isn’t required on labels, and many people aren’t aware of it.

Even for those not following a specific diet and just trying to eat better or be more conscious of animal welfare, it’s important to know the story behind what you’re reading on those labels.  So, following are some common label terms and what they really mean.

BHA – (Butylated Hydroxyanisole) An antioxidant used in both foods and food packaging for slowing the development of off-flavors caused by oxidation. Often used in conjunction with bht. BHA is listed as a known carcinogen in the state of California. May cause tumors; possible neurotoxicant, gastrointestinal or liver toxicant, and skin toxicant.

BHT – (Butylated Hydroxytoluene) Also an antioxidant used in both foods (particularly those foods containing fats and oils) and food packaging for slowing the development of off-flavors caused by oxidation. Often used in conjunction with bha. May cause tumors; Possible carcinogen.

Cage-Free – An unregulated term used for eggs laid by hens that were raised without cages. Implies hens were raised with more room for natural behaviors, however hens may or may not have access to the outdoors.  In fact, some egg farms selling “cage-free” eggs have been known to keep chickens in very poor, over-crowded conditions not much better than cages.

High Fructose Corn Syrup – Liquid sweetener processed from corn starch. Tastes sweeter and is less costly than sucrose. Besides sweetening, it’s used to improve texture and increase shelf stability. HFCS may increase risk for diabetes and obesity. May be toxic to the liver. Classified as a natural ingredient by the FDA.

Fair Trade – Fair trade certification ensures a product was produced by farmers and farm workers who receive fair wages, safe working conditions, and protection under democratic social policies. Fair Trade engages in sustainable farming and currently operates in 58 developing countries across Asia, Latin America, and Africa. FLO-CERT, an independent and international certification company, is responsible for inspection and certification.

Carmine/Cochineal – Also listed as Cochineal Extract or Carminic Acid. An intense reddish dye obtained by an aqueous extraction from the dried and ground bodies of a female scale insect Dactylopius coccus costa.

Olestra – A non-digestible sugar-based compound used as a fat substitute. Its molecules cannot be absorbed by the body, and therefore pass through the digestive system without adding calories or fat. Olestra, used under the trade name Olean, may induce laxative effects and abdominal cramping, and it inhibits the body’s absorption of vitamins A, D, E, K, and other nutrients.

Of course there are hundreds (or thousands) of other label terms to be aware of, so check out this glossary of food label terms to get the full scoop.  Learning to take care of yourself by watching what you eat might take some time at first, but the dividends will pay off for a lifetime.  As a chiropractor, I’m concerned with all aspects of your health. So get in touch with our office if you have questions about any facet of health and find out how chiropractic care can enhance your health for life.
